Guidelines
Nomination Information
The ISI Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award was established in 1980 and is administered by the Information Science Education Committee.
1.1 The award shall consist of a cash award of $1,000. Additionally, ISI shall contribute $500 towards travel or other expenses to the grant recipient, contingent upon the recipient's attending the ASIS&T annual meeting, and $250 to ASIS&T Headquarters towards administrative fees.
2. Purpose of the Award
2.1 The purpose of the award is to recognize the unique teaching contribution of an individual as a teacher of information science.
3. Eligibility
3.1 The recipient of the award need not be a member of the Society but must be directly engaged in teaching some aspect of information science on a continuing basis, in an academic or a non-academic setting.
3.2 Nominees need not be associated with an educational institution; however, teaching information science must represent a significant work responsibility although it need not occur within the traditional classroom. Workshops, speeches, publications, and presentations, in addition to academic courses, can also be used to teach information science.
3.3 Previous recipients of the award are ineligible, as are members of the Education Committee during the year of the award.
4. Administration
4.1 The ISI Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award is sponsored by the Institute for Scientific Information and is administered by the Information Science Education Committee.
5.1 Nominations should be submitted electronically by July 1.
5.2 The nomination package should include the following:
(a) Name of the award for which the nominee is being considered;
(b) Nominee's name, title, affiliation, address, telephone, FAX, and E-Mail numbers;
(c) Nominator's name, title, affiliation, address, telephone, FAX, and E-Mail numbers;
(d) Table of Contents with pagination;
(e) Nominee's unique contribution to the teaching of information science, described in a 250-word statement;
(f) Nominee's resume of no more than three pages;
(g) Evidence of sustained excellence and a unique contribution to teaching Information Science shall include:
- A maximum of three outlines or syllabi of Information Science courses (a workshop outline may be substituted for one course); OR
- A maximum of three outlines of texts of speeches/presentations given outside the nominee's place of employment, or workshop outlines, or unique course(s) taught, or any combination of these; (NOTE: Because of progress in the discipline and changes of technology, the latest revision or presentation should be included for each item.) [up to 40 points]
(h) Evidence of innovative and imaginative teaching/presentation materials shall include a maximum of three such materials created; [up to 10 points]
(I) Evidence of innovative and imaginative teaching/presentation methods shall include a maximum of such methods; [up to 10 points]
(j) A list of consulting activities; [up to 5 points]
(k) A list of professional association activities; [up to 5 points]
(l) A list of awards and honors; [up to 5 points]
(m) Evidence of the impact of a maximum of five core information science publications using relevant infometric (bibliometric and/or scientometric) measures such as citation counts, number and origin of requests, journal and/or publisher status, number of purchases of books or other published materials, etc.; [up to 10 points]; and
(n) Evidence of impact on students, colleagues, administrators, and others from a maximum of five letters of testimony from those who have firsthand knowledge of the nominee's Information Science teaching abilities; [up to 15 points]
6. Jury Committee
6.1 The Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award Jury is composed of four members and a Jury Chair, appointed by the Chair of the Information Science Education Committee. All members of the Jury shall serve for one year.
6.2 Members of the Jury may serve no more than two consecutive terms.
6.3 At least one member of the Jury shall be appointed from the membership of SIG/ED, with the concurrence of the Chair of SIG/ED. At least one member of the Jury, and preferably two, shall have a non-academic affiliation.
6.4 If one of the members of the Jury is nominated for the award, the Chair of the Information Science Education Committee shall appoint a temporary replacement for that juror for that year.
6.5 The Jury may act as a nominations committee by soliciting nominations. The Jury may also consider nominations that were submitted in two previous years.
7. Selection of the Awardee
7.1 Only one of the nominees may be designated a winner.
7.2 Jurors shall carefully review the nomination package for each nominee and evaluate it category by category using the weights established in Sections 5.2(g) - 5.2(n) under nominations.
7.3 Jurors shall submit in writing each nominee's score, on category by category, to the Jury Chair.
7.4 The Jury Chair shall tally and rank the scores to determine the winner.
7.5 In the absence of qualified nominations, the Jury may review nominations that were submitted during the two previous years or solicit additional nominations.
7.6 In the event that the Jury decides that none of the nominations should be recognized, no award may be given that year.
7.7 The Jury Chair shall communicate the name of the winner to jury members, the ASIS&T President, the Chair of the Information Science Education Committee, the Chair of the Awards and Honors Committee, and the ASIS&T Executive Director.
7.8 The Jury Chair shall provide a 50-250 word abstract, stating why the award was given. This abstract will be used to publicize the award. Material for this abstract can be taken from the voting rationales provided by the members of the jury.
7.9 The Jury Chair shall submit the nomination packets and the results of jury deliberations to ASIS&T Headquarters, after selection of the awardee has been completed.
8. Presentation of the Award
8.1 The award, consisting of a check for $1,000 and a certificate, shall be presented to the winner by the Chair of the Information Science Education Committee at the banquet of the annual meeting of the Society.
9. Publicity
9.1 The award shall be publicized through the Bulletin of the American Society for Information Science and Technology and the Society website. Publicity is the responsibility of ASIS&T Headquarters.
10. Deadlines
10.1 Appointments to the Jury Committee shall be made in advance of the award year and not later than the start of the ASIS&T annual meeting.
10.2 Nominations must be submitted to ASIS&T Headquarters by July 1. All nominations submitted shall be acknowledged upon receipt.
10.3 Selection shall be made and the ASIS&T President, the Chair of the Information Science Education Committee, the Chair of the Awards and Honors Committee, and the ASIS&T Executive Director shall be notified by 60 days before the start of the ASIS&T annual meeting.
