The Relationships between Motivations and Answering Strategies: An Exploratory Review of Health
Answerers' Behaviors in Yahoo! Answers
ASIST 2011 Annual Meeting
New Orleans, LA, October 9-12, 2011
The purpose of the current study is to identify whether there are relationships between motivations and answering strategies of health answerers in social Q&A, and to explore the relationships. From a comprehensive review of literature and research experiences with social Q&A, a model of health answering processes, which are composed of ten motivations and five steps of answering strategies, was proposed and tested. An online survey was used to investigate health
answerers' motivations and strategies. As a result, it was observed that the answering strategies may vary according to motivations. The findings from the current study can be used to promote the contribution of health answerers in social Q&A services, as well as in other services, targeting answerers who are highly motivated by altruism, enjoyment, or efficacy, rather than reputation, reciprocity, or personal gain.
