Four Epistemological Views of Information Organization Behavior on Personal Computers

Hong Zhang, Linda Smith and Michael Twidale

(Submission #139)

Hjørland proposes a typology of four epistemological views as an analytical tool in examining professional knowledge organization systems. We use this typology as a basic descriptive analytical framework to inform an analysis of personal information organization behavior. In our study, we identified all four views in the folder structures created by participants on their personal computers. The typology enabled us to identify commonalities within the very large number of particular information organizational practices observed both within and between individuals over time. The study also revealed the complexity of particular behaviors that do not conform to a single view. Moreover, the typology helps to illuminate problems in current folder systems.
