ASIS&T 2008 - Columbus

The 2008 ASIS&T Conference went very well for SIGVIS. The panel that we sponsored was well attended, with over 75 people in attendance and a very lively breakout session afterward. Such sessions have been encouraged in the past, and the way these worked out this year -- with people separating into groups to discuss specific aspects of what had been presented -- is surely a model we would like to follow in the future. Special thanks go to Dr. Sam Hastings for setting the tone and starting us off well.

Our co-sponsored panels also went well, and allowed for a number of good connections to be made with members of other SIGs. We hope to build on these for next year's conference.

Call For Papers - ASIS&T 2009 - Vancouver

Speaking of year's conference, there are several items in the CFP that may appeal to us, among them:

  • Cross-language information retrieval
  • Cross-border data flows
  • Open access and cultural diversity
  • Information literacy and challenges of harmony versus hegemony
  • The role of international organizations in building on diversity
  • Social networking in a linguistically and culturally rich environment

If these or any of the topics in the CFP appeal to you, please let us know, and we'll do what we can to help.

We have a new Chair for SIGVIS, a new Treasurer, and for the first time a Communications Director and a Past Chair. See the Officers page for more details.

It has been suggested that we should start an annotated bibliography of important works in our field, probably by starting a wiki for such things so that we can collaborate as needed. If anyone has any thoughts about the form that such a work should take, please contact Chris Landbeck with your suggestions.

If you have any thoughts about what SIGVIS should be doing with its collective time, please let us know. Any panel suggestions for Vancouver, either as a stand-alone effort or in collaboration with other SIGs, would be most welcome. Or if you have a project in mind that we can help with, we'd be glad to help.
