    • discussion on how we should organize our communications this year; in the past, we have done some reports on programs, and sent these out as irregular communications
    • there are new options available such as blogs, wikis
    • perhaps we could start an LT blog and focus on energies on this, as opposed to list traffic
    • we will ask HQ for permission for access to SIG reports
    • Ranti could do quarterly SIG reports and send out welcomes to new members
  3. Programming for the 2008 Annual Meeting
    1. one person asked about what the scope of SIG LT is in terms of practictioner vs. research - broad approach to any kind of technology that can be applied in a library setting
    2. One Laptop per Child initiative; possible contacts are Kevin Rioux, Bharat Mahra, Dania Bilal, Kendra Albright (SIG USE); also SIG III (Pascal)
    3. Improving library applications through log analysis and direct user observation (Pascal)
      • Rong Tang and Pascal Calarco: Notre Dame Metalib study
      • perhaps reuse method at Minnesota and compare results with the Notre Dame study
      • contact Ari (Finland) to see if they are interested in Metalib (Pascal)
    4. Local loading of data, managing disparate data (Janet)
      • Peter Murray (OhioLink)
      • Los Alamos Lab or Caltech
      • OCUL - Peter at University of Toronto (Pascal)
    5. Digital Rights Management issues (Rafal)
      • inspired by conference organized at University of Houston by Charles Bailey
      • SIG SI interested in co-sponsoring; Kristen Eschenfelder
      • how DRM impacts fair use
    6. Developing ontologies/taxonomies (Judith)
      • Joseph Busch, SIG CR
      • Examples: automated medical text indexing (ask Nancy Roderer)
      • Data Harmony automated processing of e-texts to cataloging (Margie Hlava)
      • Using data mining to create taxonomies
  4. Judith will represent SIG LT at the all SIG planning meeting on Wednesday.

Update from the SIG Planning Meeting:

  • SIG KM is interested in the One Laptop per Child program, contact is Qiping Zhang
  • SIG DL is interested in the DRM program
  • There might be interest from DL and CR in the taxonomy program
  • A number of SIGs were not represented at the meeting
