The six winners will each receive two-year memberships in ASIS&T, SIG III. Four of the six winners (1, 2, 4, and 5) will be at the Annual Conference in Chicago to present ten minute summaries of their papers. The other two summaries will be presented by judges Dr. Bahaa El Hadidy and Dr Ben-Ami Lipetz.

The session, #18 International Digital Library Advances in Developing Countries (SIG III), will be on Tuesday, November 14, 9:00 a.m. Arkansas/Mayfair Room.

Many thanks to Nathalie Leroy for her work with me in coordinating the effort, and also to Trudi Bellardo who coordinated the judging. All thirty-five papers submitted are being considered for the "Bulletin," or for a special issue of Academic Press' International Information and Library Review. The remaining papers will be made available on the SIG III web site.

Thanks to Eugene Garfield for paying the expenses for the mailing, for the assistance of Dick Hill and the ASIS&T staff, for the support of ASIS&T members, and of Academic Press.

2. Fundraising Results

Total money raised was $7,385 which will be used for the memberships, and some expenses by Fellows in attending the Conference. Sixty-four donations were received from ASIS members. A special thanks to Haworth Press for their $500 donation, and to Academic Press for their $2,750 donation.

b) Global Networks and Virtual Communication (SIG III)

Overview:

The Internet has made it possible for people with shared interests from around the world to interact and collaborate with one another in new and exiting ways. In this session speakers from several different countries will discuss their own experiences with some of the collaborative opportunities and challenges posed by this new global communication network.

You Will Learn About

How two authors used the Internet to collaborate on researching and writing a book; the advantages and limitations of using a computer mediated communication on system to host a virtual conference; lessons learned from building a virtual community of practitioners and researchers in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Information and SMEs: Toward Better Strategic Information Management Approaches for SMEs (SIG III)

Overview:

In today's fast-changing, global, and increasingly competitive business environment SMEs need to be able to gather information quickly and systematically in order to anticipate and respond to rapid-fire changes in the business environment. Recognizing the importance of information management to the success of a competitive economy, many governments around the world are interested in implementing programs to help SMEs better manage information. Unfortunately, very little is known about what types of information SMEs need or how they use it. Such knowledge is essential to developing an appropriate model for strategic information management for SMEs and useful information products and services for them. In this session speakers will discuss efforts to develop a better understanding of SMEs' information needs.

You Will Learn About

What is known currently regarding SME information management; lessons and applications that can be implemented based on current knowledge; what needs to be done in terms of research and practice in this area over the next few years.

In the new global community, information policies formulated in one country can have an impact on information professionals and users worldwide. Today, a wide array of governments and international, national, and regional institutions are involved in formulating such policies. In this session speakers will explore several case studies to provide participants with a feel for the dimensions of these policy discussions.

The results of a recent workshop held to gather input from scientists about the potential renewal in 2001 of the European Union's Database Directive on anti-piracy; efforts to ensure that communities disadvantaged by their income level and location are not left out of the Internet revolution.

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great pleasure to announce that Elsevier Science , Inc., has continued its support this year to co-sponsor the SIG III International Reception. On behalf of ASIST and SIG III, I would like to present our thanks and gratitude to Elsevier, Inc. for their support. I would like also to thank Tefko Saracevic for his help in getting the Elsevier sponsorship.

It is with great honor to invite all ASIST Board of Directors, all SIG III members, ASIST staff members, all SIGS Officers and all Chapters Officers to our ASIS international gathering at the ASIST Annual Meeting. The Reception will be at the Sheraton Conference Hotel on Monday, November 13 from 8:00 to 10:00 PM at Ballroom 6. We would like also to extend our invitation to all ASIST international guests, all the international speakers and all foreign students attending the meeting.

The reception will feature some international music, some light snacks and a cash bar. There will be a silent auction, which will benefit the SIG III Infoshare Program. The Program sponsors ASIST membership for information practitioners from non-U.S. countries who cannot afford the ASIST dues.

Come and meet our international guests and enjoy the international gatherings. See you in Chicago.

6. Agenda for SIG III Annual Meeting in Chicago

If you will be at the ASIS&T meeting in Chicago, please attend the annual SIG III (International Information Issues) planning meeting on:

Monday, November 13 at 7:45 a.m. in ASIS Meeting Room B, Sheraton Hotel.
It's a good opportunity to meet people, and we really do get a good start on the work program for the entire year. We've had a very active year, and many of you have participated, or are now ready to participate or share ideas. This is a very open group hoping you will join us.

Sorry about the hour, but I will have donuts...bring your own coffee. We all want to go to the Keynote address at 9:00 a.m. We will also get together Tuesday in the same room for fine tuning, from 7:45-8:30 a.m. if you can come back, then must go off to the SIG III programs happening at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

The list is open to all (regardless of membership) and it is unmoderated. We felt that of all ASIS SIGs, International Information Issues especially needed the ability to communicate quickly and widely.
