3rd Classification Research Workshop

By Phil Smith

Just prior to this Fall's ASIS Conference, SIG/CR will hold its third
annual Classification Research Workshop. Specifically, it will be held on
Sunday, October 25, 1992, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Like the previous two years, it promises to be an opportunity to explore
important issues in the creation, development, management, representation
and application of classification schemes, especially as related to their
design and use for information retrieval. Attendance will be limited to
allow in-depth discussion of state-of-the-art issues in research and
practice.

To generate discussion, a number of speakers have been selected. Papers
providing background on their topics will be circulated to participants
prior to the workshop. A sample of the titles of the selected talks
includes such topics as:

An Associative Semantic Network for Machine-Aided Indexing,
Classification and Searching.

Hypermedia as a Model of Expert Indexing.

        Large Text Database Visualization.

Searching a Music Database with Semantically Organized Vocabulary
Sets Compiled from a Library of Congress Subject Headings Thesaurus.

An Automatic Documentation Classification System Based on Semantic
Category Frequency Analysis.

Achieving Compatibility of Indexing Languages in Online Access
Environments.

Classification Issues in the Design of Software Reuse Libraries.

The Role of Classification Structures in Reflecting and Building
Theory.

These talks, along with others, promise to cover a wide range of important
current issues in classification research.

People interested in attending this workshop should contact Raya Fidel
