Summary
Despite the proliferation of tags and tagging on the Web, the question of what are tags good for still needs more answers supported by research. This study seeks to address that question by examining the role of tags in information retrieval (IR) interaction. The question of what are tags good for can be reframed in terms of the roles tags play in 1) query formulation and reformulation; 2) relevance judgment of document surrogates and documents. An exploratory pilot study revealed the limits of a naturalistic study to investigate this question. This short paper presents work currently in progress.
