This study examines the design and evaluation of a keyframe arrangement framework for video storyboard surrogates. First, we constructed an arrangement model of keyframes for a storyboard based on the Preserved Context Indexing System (PRECIS) indexing and narrative theories. Second, we evaluated the model using six sample videos and 26 participants, and then analyzed the results using a t-test and repeated-measure MANOVA. The results revealed that viewing two storyboard versions of a video in a fixed order (first browsing its sequential storyboard and then browsing its proposed model-based arrangement) is the most effective method of improving the storyboard’s ability to summarize a video. Based on the results, we propose two methods for utilizing video storyboard surrogates in digital video libraries: (1) designing a video browsing interface where, for each video, users can use its sequential storyboard as a default, and then use its model-based arrangement (non-sequential) storyboard for viewing it again; and (2) utilizing non-sequential storyboards as structured match sources of image-based queries.
