(Submission #27)
This paper analyzes photoset and group naming conventions in Flickr to gain insight into the collection building behavior of Flickr users. Individual user photosets focused more on the components of the user’s context and group collections were organized more around general concepts, and/or discussion of on group members’ work. It appears that individual photosets may evolve from bottom-up based on some shared attributes of the user’s photos and group collections may be constructed top-down by matching the photo attributes to the purpose of the group. The study identified ten categories of attributes that users might use for forming digital photo collections and compared these to earlier research.
