Bibliographic Access Using a Case-Based Reasoning Engine

Presented at ASIST 2004 Annual Meeting; "Managing and Enhancing Information: Cultures and Conflicts" (ASIST AM 04), Providence, Rhode Island, November 13 - 18, 2004

Abstract

Accessing literature based on its content is often limited to keyword descriptors. Researchers trying to locate research reports about topics that use similar methods or similar research populations are typically not supported. In this poster, we describe our activities in the application of a case-based reasoning (CBR) engine for accessing a bibliographic database of research studies on problem solving. The CBR engine retrieves cases (the research reports on problem solving) based on similar semantic meanings between the query case and stored cases. As a result, even when it cannot find perfectly matched cases, it always finds similar cases to the query case.
