The poster session reports on preliminary citation context analysis of Shannon and Weaver’s Mathematical Theory of Communication within the LIS literature. Results indicate that poor citation practices have helped this particular “information theory” persist beyond the bounds of its usefulness for library and information science. It is crucial to recognize this and to stop extrapolating from and using such mechanistic models to reflect the vagaries of human information behavior and communication if we intend to progess in our understanding the effects of context, cognition, and affect.
