Abstract

Force feedback display has been used in video games for years, and has been suggested for use in other systems such as geographic information systems (GIS). Meanwhile, various assistive devices, such as embossing monitors and Braille pads, have been developed to allow the visually impaired to interact with computers, but these are usually expensive, with costs up to thousands of dollars. This project will explore a web based text-to-Braille conversion program developed in PERL/CGI. Braille output is displayed as dots on the monitor, visually similar to physical Braille, which have force-feedback effects embedded in them. This will allow the user to 'feel' the display even though it is a virtual one. We will test this approach with the visually impaired and Braille readers, and report their feedback.
