Researchers in diverse as well as similar disciplines should be sharing ideas and work toward solving the many problems our modern information society faces. Human-computer interaction professionals and software engineers share a common focus on building successful software systems. In theory, two communities, which have common goals and share common ideas, would also share a base of published literature. However, an analysis of the literature within these two areas, shows little integration between each field. We contend that each profession would benefit by working and learning together. Software engineers and human-computer professionals share complimentary skills which would increase the likelihood of building successful systems. The organization of these fields, as indicated in the literature, is examined through the use of bibliometric analysis. We consider where bridges between these communities might be constructed.
