Call for PapersHumanizing Information Technology:
From Ideas to Bits and Back American Society for Information Science and Technology Annual Conference
Long Beach, CA Oct. 19-22, 2003 (click here for important due dates) Papers, posters and presentations are solicited in a wide variety of information and technology related areas, including:
• Information management, organization and access, including classification and representation, metadata, taxonomies, indexing, XML, information architecture, digital libraries. •
Information seeking and use, including research on the role of information in daily lives and in work and the professions, use of various types of information technology, social contexts of information seeking.
• Information retrieval: information system performance, search engines, natural language processing, data mining, intelligent retrieval, multi- and cross-lingual retrieval. • Interactivity: user and
usability studies, design of human-computer interfaces, visualization, for all types of information technology. • Ethical, social, political, legal and economic issues related to the role of information in
society, such as privacy, copyright, information policy, as well as the social role of information technologies such as the Internet and the World Wide Web. • Information production, transfer, and delivery,
electronic publishing and dissemination. • Technologies for computing and networking: information communication, collaboration, information security, e-commerce.
The conference themes will be explored by keynote and invited speakers, and through refereed papers, posters, panels, and technical sessions. Participation is invited through submission of papers and posters, and
proposals for panels, technical and other sessions on topics related to the general themes. TYPES OF SUBMISSIONS * Contributed Papers Contributed Papers should present original research
and will be refereed. Accepted papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings. Paper submissions (maximum 10 pages single spaced) should include title, abstract and full-text of the proposed paper. Provide the author(s)
name, affiliation, and email address. For the primary author, give the complete address, telephone and fax numbers. Papers are due by February 7, 2003. Papers will be reviewed and authors notified by March 27, 2003. Camera-ready
copy for the Proceedings will be due by May 15, 2003. Copy must be submitted according to a template provided at the ASIST conference webpage. Contributed Papers may be grouped by topic and presented in Contributed
Paper sessions, combined into technical sessions, or suggested for poster or other sessions. * Technical Panel Sessions Technical panel sessions can be proposed and developed by individuals, by ASIS&T
Special Interest Groups (SIGs), by outside organizations, or collaboratively. Proposals should include title and sponsor(s); name, address, telephone, fax and email address for the contact person who is coordinating the session;
names and affiliations of presenters and other participants (moderators, reactors, etc.); and a 500 word descriptive abstract of the session. Proposals must be received by February 7, 2003 and notification of acceptance will be
made by March 27, 2003. Information for the technical program and camera-ready copy is due by May 15, 2003. * Posters A poster session will offer an opportunity to present new and promising work and
preliminary results, and to invite questions and discussions on ongoing work. Submissions should include title and a 500-word description of the research to be presented in the poster, as well as the presenter's name, affiliation,
complete address, telephone and fax numbers and email address. The submission deadline is February 24, 2003. Notification of acceptance will be made by March 27, 2003. Poster abstracts will be published in the Proceedings (2 page
maximum); deadline for camera-ready copy is May 15, 2003. * Special Sessions and Other Formats Submissions are also welcome from individuals or organizations for innovative formats such as debates,
discussion groups, demonstrations or other sessions that would be of interest to conference participants. To submit a proposal, send a session title, 500-word descriptive abstract, contact information about the proposer (name,
address, phone and fax numbers, and email address), and possible participants where applicable. Proposals for special sessions must bereceived by January 28, 2003 and notification of acceptance will be made by March 27, 2003.
