Now that we have survived the change of millennia (remember Y2K?) the Web
is
consolidating its position as the technical fix, bogeyman, or touchstone
for
the new era. It underpins proclamations of increased worker productivity,
threatens individual privacy, or underwrites a cottage industry of
inventing
new metaphors. The Web has introduced profound and cumulating changes in
our personal and professional lives. But the Web is not uniform -
personal
home pages differ from e-business storefronts or search engine
portals. We
will explore information science research approaches to the Web,
uncovering
new perspectives and dimensions, teasing apart tangled skeins, and
possibly
predicting where this 500-pound gorilla may be headed.
Debora (Ralf) Shaw is a Past-President of the Association for
Information Science and Technology, and Associate Editor of the Annual
Review of Information Science and Technology. She is Associate Dean at
the
Indiana University School of Library and Information Science, and also a
founding faculty member of the University's new School of
Informatics. Her
research and teaching interests include representation of information and
analysis of WWW hypertext linking practices. She holds a Ph.D. in Library
and Information Science from Indiana University, a M.A.L.S. in Library
Science from the University of Michigan, and a B.A. in the History of
Ideas
