Now that we have survived the change of millennia (remember Y2K?) the Web is consolidating its position as the technical fix, bogeyman, or touchstone for the new era. It underpins proclamations of increased worker productivity, threatens individual privacy, or underwrites a cottage industry of inventing new metaphors. The Web has introduced profound and cumulating changes in our personal and professional lives. But the Web is not uniform - personal home pages differ from e-business storefronts or search engine portals. We will explore information science research approaches to the Web, uncovering new perspectives and dimensions, teasing apart tangled skeins, and possibly predicting where this 500-pound gorilla may be headed. Debora (Ralf) Shaw is a Past-President of the Association for Information Science and Technology, and Associate Editor of the Annual Review of Information Science and Technology. She is Associate Dean at the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science, and also a founding faculty member of the University's new School of Informatics. Her research and teaching interests include representation of information and analysis of WWW hypertext linking practices. She holds a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from Indiana University, a M.A.L.S. in Library Science from the University of Michigan, and a B.A. in the History of Ideas from the University of Michigan.
