Digital Libraries: Taming the Information Frontier for Users

4:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 29, 1999

William T. Young Library
University of Kentucky
Lexington, Kentucky

The Digital Library (DL) is an evolving electronic entity that is establishing a presence as an important information resource. The DL has great appeal because its inherent design combines end-user needs with technology that has the ability to handle vast amounts of complex data. Worldwide, researchers are working to refine the DL by focusing on human-centered issues such as information seeking behavior and increased ease of human-computer interaction as well as on technological issues such as enhanced system architecture and artifact representation. Metadata schemes and metalanguages provide the technological capabilities to extend DL services to include more efficient search and retrieval, interoperability, extensibility and desktop delivery of multi-media documents. A strength of the DL is its ability to service a wide range of user communities by providing a multi-dimensional design framework that can answer the needs of heterogeneous groups. For information professionals, the DL also offers a content rich environment that increases the accessibility of knowledge across disciplinary boundaries.

Suzie Allard is a doctoral student in the University of Kentucky's College of Communications and Information Studies.
