"Electronic Journals: Bytes Out of Myths & Bits of Reality"

5:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 16, 1999

LEXIS-NEXIS, Dayton, OH

King Research and the School of Information Sciences, University of Tennessee have conducted over 100 studies dealing with scholarly publishing back to the 1960s, including 13,500 readership surveys. The data and information from these studies have helped expose some widely held myths concerning the use, usefulness and value of scholarly journals; why prices are so high; the contribution and future of libraries; and what electronic journals will and will not do. Mr. King and Carol Tenopir have completed a book on electronic journals that is designed to help publishers, scientists, libraries and their funders understand each others' incentives and goals, and how they can benefit from this medium. The talk will address some of these results.

Donald King, formerly President of King Research, is now devoting his time in retirement to publishing and speaking. Since the early 1960s, he has conducted nearly 300 studies of information systems and services. Many of these studies have been summarized in 15 books and hundreds of formal publications. Mr. King's contributions to information science have been recognized through the ASIS Award of Merit and the ASIS Research Award, and as a Pioneer in Information Science among other awards in the fields of statistics, library science, and abstracting and indexing. He was president of ASIS in 1984.
