the Production of Knowledge
GUEST SPEAKER:
Ron Day, Assistant Professor - Wayne State University
Date:
(5:15 pm - 6:00 pm Chapter planning meeting)
Location:
Library Information Science Program (LISP) Conference Room
*Kresge 315*, [attached to the main office on the third floor]
5244 Gullen Mall
Wayne State University,
Detroit, MI
(map of main campus)
Tentative Program:
Ron will discuss some of the themes in his recent JASIS (52(9)) publication,
"Totality and Representation: A History of Knowledge Management Through
European Documentation, Critical Modernity, and Post-Fordism"
(electronically available at: http://www.lisp.wayne.edu/~ai2398/kmasis.htm )
and his recently published book, The Modern Invention of Information:
Discourse, History, and Power (Southern Illinois University Press, 2001).
In this talk, Ron will discuss the production of knowledge, information,
and value within European documentation, "critical modernity," and
post-modernity. Possible works to be discussed are those from authors such
as Otlet, Briet, Heidegger, Benjamin, and Negri. Hopefully, a lively
discussion will follow.
Following Ron's presentation, we will also have a few members who attended
the ASIS&T Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. (Nov 4-8) report back their
experiences and summary of technical programs they attended. The purpose is
to share the Annual Meeting with those who have never attended an ASIS&T
Annual Meeting before as well as simply share the meeting with those who
were unable to attend. We hope to better understand how the Annual Meetings
are conducted, what takes place, who attends these meetings (and why), and
what can be learned by attending.
