The LACASIS January dinner program's topic was The Internet and Web Privacy. It was held Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at the UCLA Faculty Center. Speaker Karen Coyle's presentation explained the privacy risks of Internet use and how these relate
to patron and staff use of the Net. Topics of discussion included: current U.S. privacy laws,
technical solutions to privacy risks, how libraries can educate the public, IP addresses, cookies
and security issues.
The topic for the 2001 LACASIS March meeting was: Midstream: Exploring Your Career Options.
It was held March 20, 2001 at the
Empress Pavilion restaurant in los Angeles. Kathleen Smith spoke about career planning, career retooling and exploring
alternatives to your current job.
The May 2001 workshop on Licensing 101: a Workshop on Licensing Digital Resources was held Saturday, May 19, 2001 at the UCLA Young Research Library. Sharon Farb, Coordinator for Digital Acquisitions for the UCLA
Library, was the speaker.
The LACASIS June business meeting's topic wasInformation Architecture: Practice and Perils. It was held on Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at the Culver Hotel. A panel of speakers provided an overview of their field and address some hot issues and challenges that face information architects and web designers today.
LACASIS' annual workshop was held Friday, September 21, 2001 at Chapman University in orange, CA. This year's
topic was California's Gold: Nuggets
on Managing, Accessing, Sharing & Developing Digital Resources. The workshop provided attendees with the opportunity to learn more about the latest
technologies for managing, accessing, sharing, & developing digital
resources. Lucy Wegner, library director of The Rand Corporation, was the keynote speaker.
The 2001 Contributions to Information Science Award dinner was held Tuesday, November 11, 2001 at the UCLA Faculty Center. Elaine Svenonius, Professor Emerita, was this year's award recipient.
The LACASIS - SLA/SCC annual holiday meeting will be held December 11, 2000 at the Summit House restaurant in Fullerton, CA. Ron Kilgore, KFWB news anchor, is the featured speaker.
