The OCLC usability lab was established in 1990 as one of the first Usability Labs in the Central
Ohio area. It was the post-doctoral project of Mike Prasse, who has been manager of the ULab
since its beginning. This presentation will a history of the ULab (now in its third incarnation), and
will include various tidbits of do’s and don’ts when establishing and running a usability lab in a
large corporation.

PRESENTER:

Mike Prasse, Ph.D.
has worked in the field of usability evaluation (today known as ‘User Experience’ or UX) for over
25 years. He received his B.A. in mathematics and psychology in 1976 from the University of
Southern California and his doctorate in experimental psychology in 1987 from The Ohio State
University. He has published numerous articles and presentations over the past 20 years, with
his latest being a comparison of the Google search results page with that of worldcat.org, using
eye-tracking data. He lives with his wife Judi and their five dogs, making his favorite hobby by
necessity studying the psychology of dogs and its application to training them!
