This program and tour will highlight the mission, resources and patrons served by the A. T. Wehrle Memorial Library of the Pontifical College Josephinum. Special focus will include the collection in philosophy and the theological disciplines that supports the seminary’s two programs, the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Theology. The seminary’s unique beginning, pontifical status and its initiative to digitize, preserve, and share its history will also be featured.
Built from the personal library of its founder, Monsignor Joseph Jessing and other early faculty members, the library has grown in size and advanced its use of technology. Today the collection numbers over 150,000 print books, 200,000 ebooks and a core collection of digital resources. Since 2007 the library has been a member of The Ohio Private Academic Library consortium (OPAL) and OhioLINK. One remnant from the past is its continued use of the Lynn-Paterson Alternative Classification for Catholic Books to organize its theological collection.
Peter Veracka and Beverly Lane will host this program. Peter’s responsibilities and interest include theological bibliography, collection development and acquisitions, reference services and special collections. He received an MSLS from the University of Kentucky. Beverly’s focus is on technology including the maintenance of the library web page, discovery layer, and holdings management, in addition to cataloging, instruction, and working on the digitization of the special collections. She received an MLS from Kent State University.
