SIG News
None of the special interest groups sent in their nominations packets
or annual activity reports in August, so the really big news this
year was the absence of SIG of the Year and SIG Member of the Year
awards.
A new SIG was created, called SIG USE (Information Needs, Seeking
and Use.) It is "…concerned with the activities, both behavioral
and cognitive, of people who are interacting with information."
The newly elected Chair is Barbara Wildemuth, Chair-elect: Dave
Robins
Elections were held for the following: SIG Representative to the
Nominations Committee – Trudi Hahn, Representatives to the SIG of
the Year Jury – Teresa Beamsley & Heather Hall, SIG Cabinet
Steering Committee Members – Michael Leach, Erica Lilly, Jay Norton.
The proposed merger of SIGs STI and MED which had been tabled until
further review was dismissed. The SIGs will remain separate.
SIGs are requested to "clean up" their web sites – check for broken
links and delete old information. If the SIGs don’t fix their sites,
the web sites will be taken down. ASIS HQ will be happy to set up
and support listservs for SIGs that want them, but the lists must
be moderated by the SIGs.
The 1999 Annual Meeting Chair solicited proposals for SIG panels
and sessions. The meeting next year will center on the theme of
Knowledge: Creation, Organization, and Use. Targeted tracks will
address specific aspects of the topic including: "Discovery, Capture
and Creation," "Classification and Representation," "Dissemination
and Publishing," "Information Retrieval," and "Ethical, Cultural,
and Social Aspects." The deadline for SIG proposals is December
15th

Chapter News
An analysis of the results of an electronic focus group indicated
that members would like to attend programs with a research focus
that applies to what they are doing in the workplace. In addition,
the survey indicated that they valued networking at meetings. What
do you think? Chapters were encouraged to post information on Chapters-L,
the Chapters listserv that is enjoying only moderate success so
far.
Special Pre-Conference Session for ASIS Members
For "early birds" the Leadership Development Committee provided
a very well attended session on "What it Takes to Become a Successful
Leader in ASIS". The title of the session should not have been
so limiting. Lessons provided could apply to many aspects of our
professional and personal lives. Some hints were just common sense.
For instance, Candy Schwartz pointed out the importance of thanking
people and giving recognition for a job well done. Nancy Routher
pointed out that it is very important to know what has to be done
and to have a job for everyone.
Suggested Follow-Up
Copyright Retention
In one interesting session that examined journal pricing publishing
and copyright, Cliff Lynch, Executive Director of the Coalition
for Networked Information, stated that he felt that author retention
of copyright is not scalable -- and that it is a little frightening.
He said that we must retain a system that is sensible. As you probably
know, there is a court case now being appealed that deals with this
issue. ASIS DVC Views invites comments on this position.
