Department of Information Sciences in Zagreb

There are three library and information science departments in Croatia. The oldest one is in Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia. It was founded at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb, in 1981. Today Department of Information Sciences in Zagreb consists of seven sub-departments: archivistics and documentalistics, librarianship, social-humanistic informatics, book and publishing, lexicography and encyclopaedistics, museology and knowledge organization. It offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate study.

There are eight projects run by the Department: Hybrid library and access to scientific information, Croatian dictionary heritage and presentation of dictionary knowledge, Croatian identity in place marketing and in the development strategy, Preservation and communication of cultural heritage, Organization of information and knowledge in electronic educational environment, Marked database and Croatian sentences syntax , Computer understanding of natural languages, Knowledge types and information processing methods.

Department has established international cooperation with University of Tampere in Finland, Universita degli Studi di Roma 'La Sapienzia' in Italy, University of Toronto, Toronto in Canada, ICIMSS-International Center for Information Management Systems and Services in Poland, University of Bath, Loughborough University, University College London City University and South Bank University in United Kingdom.

Department of Information Sciences in Osijek

Department of Information Sciences in Osijek was founded in 1998 at the Faculty of Philsophy, University of Osijek. Department consists of three sub-departments: sub-department for library management, sub-department of information management and sub-department for publishing and bookselling. It offers undergraduate and graduate study, and works on establishing postgraduate study.

There are two projects run by the Department. One of them is Researching reading interests and information needs of children and young adults. Second one is Organization, preservation and the use of Croatian literary heritage.

Intensive international cooperation has been established. Every year experts from LIS field come and teach at the Department for few weeks. Such cooperation was done with Rutgers University and Texas University, USA, and Loughborough University, UK. Cooperation with universities in Eisenstadt (Austria), Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Oxford Brookes (UK) are under development. Department works on establishing student exchange. For now, students can study for one semester in Eisenstadt, Austria.

Department is a co-organizer of the annual international conference Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA). LIDA started in 2000 with an aim to address the changing environment for libraries and information systems and services in the digital world. It has an emphasis on examining contemporary problems, advances and solutions. Conference has a different theme each year and it is divided in two parts. The first part is based on research and development. The second one addresses advances in applications and practice. The conference is oriented toward professionals and researchers in librarianship, information science, and informatics, as well other disciplines interested in this topic. Department of Library and Information Science in Zadar

Department of Library and Information Science in Zadar is the youngest department in LIS field in Croatia. It was founded in 2001 as a result of cooperation between University of Osijek and University of Zadar. It offers undergraduate and graduate study. Department cooperates with Osijek department and participates in projects and LIDA conference organization.
